Before you plan anything

The best hockey dates match the person, not just the sport. A first date with someone you barely know should be short, public and cheap. A tenth date can be a road trip to an away game. Ask what they enjoy, whether they skate and how much hockey they want in an evening before you book anything.

Below are ideas grouped by season, with notes on cost and how well each works as a first date.

Fall: October and November

1. Home opener watch party. Many fan clubs and sports bars host one. It is loud, festive and easy to leave if things are not clicking. Great first date.

2. A college game. NCAA hockey starts in October. Tickets are usually much cheaper than the NHL, the student section brings real energy and the arenas are smaller. Campuses from Boston to Denver to Minnesota have strong programs. Good first date.

3. A minor league night. AHL and ECHL teams play in dozens of American cities, many of which have no NHL team. Promotions like jersey nights, dog-friendly games and fan contests keep it light. Excellent first date.

4. Learn to skate together. Many rinks offer adult skating lessons in the fall. Falling down together breaks the ice, literally. Good second or third date.

5. A Thanksgiving week game. The NHL usually schedules a full slate around the holiday, with an afternoon game the day after Thanksgiving. It can be a fun outing with friends or family, or a relaxed date when everyone is in a holiday mood.

Winter: December to February

6. An outdoor rink downtown. Big cities set up seasonal rinks in parks and plazas. New York has Bryant Park and Rockefeller Center, Chicago has rinks in Millennium Park and Maggie Daley Park, Detroit has Campus Martius and Pittsburgh has PPG Place. Check opening dates first. Great first date.

7. Pond hockey or a frozen lake skate. In Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and New England, natural ice is part of winter. Only skate where a city or park crew maintains the ice and has posted it as open. Bring hot chocolate. Better as a later date.

8. Watch an outdoor NHL game. The league holds outdoor games most winters, including the Winter Classic around New Year's Day. The 2027 edition is set for Salt Lake City on December 31. Watching at a bar or at home with snacks is an easy date even if you cannot travel.

9. The Beanpot. Boston's four-school college tournament fills two Monday nights early in February. It is a local tradition and a great date for college hockey fans.

10. A cozy road-trip game. Pick a city a few hours away, book a hotel and catch a game. Save this for when you know each other well.

11. Super Bowl Sunday skate. Rinks are often quiet during the big game. If neither of you cares about football, a public skate or an empty bar can be the most relaxing date of February.

Spring: March to June

12. A playoff race game. March and early April games carry real stakes. The atmosphere is tense and exciting. Better for a second or third date.

13. The Frozen Four. The NCAA championship weekend in April moves between cities. If it comes near you, it is a memorable date for college fans.

14. A playoff watch party. Many teams host outdoor watch parties outside their arenas during home and road playoff games. Huge crowds, big screens and lots of energy. Good first date if you both like a crowd.

15. A PWHL game. The Professional Women's Hockey League has teams in US markets including Boston, Minnesota, New York and Seattle. Games are friendly, family-oriented and affordable. Great first date.

Summer: July to September

16. Inline skating or roller hockey. Parks and boardwalks from Venice Beach to Chicago's lakefront are perfect for skating in warm weather. Good first date if you both skate.

17. Stick-and-puck at the rink. Many rinks run summer sessions where you can shoot pucks on open ice. A fun active date for players, or for someone who wants to learn.

18. A hockey movie night. "Miracle" tells the story of the 1980 US Olympic team. "Slap Shot" is a cult comedy about a minor league team. "The Mighty Ducks" is pure nostalgia. Pair one with takeout.

19. A summer league game. Plenty of adult leagues run through the summer. Watching your date play in shorts and a T-shirt in the stands is a fun change.

20. A hockey museum or hall of fame visit. The United States Hockey Hall of Fame is in Eveleth, Minnesota, on the Iron Range. It makes a fun stop on a summer road trip north.

The big-league question

It can be, but it is a big commitment. A regular-season game lasts around two and a half hours, plus travel and parking. Tickets can be expensive, and you spend most of the evening looking at the ice rather than each other. If you are both big fans and you get along well in messages, it can be great. Otherwise, many people save the NHL for a second or third date and start with something shorter and cheaper, like a minor league game, a public skate or a drink at a bar during a broadcast.

Low-cost ideas

When one of you is new to hockey

Choose something social, where the game is a backdrop. Minor league theme nights, outdoor rinks and watch parties all work. Avoid long, tense games where a newcomer might feel lost. Our guide on dating someone who doesn't watch hockey has more tips.

Safety reminders for game dates

Meet at a clear landmark, buy your own ticket for a first date and plan your own way home. Late games can end after 10 p.m., so check transit times. Meeting a new date at a rink? Skim the safety page first.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good hockey first date?

Something short, public and easy to leave works best: a minor league game, a college game, an outdoor rink downtown or a watch party at a fan bar. Save long or expensive outings for later dates.

Should a first date be an NHL game?

It can be if you are both big fans, but it is a long, costly evening where you spend most of the time watching the ice. Many people save it for a second or third date and start with something smaller.

Your next game night could include someone new.
